Do you dare?
Today, I wish I could fly among the clouds.

Olympic Torch Relay in Luss, Scotland
This morning the Olympic Torch continued it’s trip across Scotland and we were between two of it’s relay locations, so decided to head to Luss and watch the relay to the pier. It’s my second time seeing an Olympic Torch relay, the first in 2002 when the torch bearers ran past my house in Racine, WI. Today’s was just as exciting as the first.

The Dark Wood
Before we reach Beinn Bhreach we must travel through the dark wood. This part of the journey is anticipated as soon as we’ve crossed the tiny bridge that brings us to Beinn Bhreach mountain. The Range Rover rambles along the gravel and dirt road, as only a 4×4 can maneuver, and suddenly sunlight is filtered into darkness as the pines along the rocky road loom overhead. We talk in spooky voices as the tires bounce through pot holes and ditches. “It’s the dark wood…” we say aloud, mimicking speakers of ghost stories and scary movies, as we pretend to watch for monsters within.

Scottish Highlands at Night
We’re back from the Scottish Highlands near Acharacle, where we stay in a family hunting lodge overlooking an ocean bay. The sunsets and sunrises are so beautiful I found myself photographing the sunsets every evening and woke up one morning at 4am to catch a sunrise. One of the nights I trekked up the mountain and after taking a few photos of the sunset, noticed the moon directly behind me. Without changing the settings on my camera left from the sunrise photos of the morning, I photographed the moon. The settings were a complete mistake and to my surprise, I was able to capture the moon. Sometimes a mistake can be a wonderful thing.
Horses on the Loch…
Tomorrow we head to the highlands in Scotland. It’s a beautiful desolate part of the country and I’m really looking forward to taking photographs along the way and while we’re there. Although the vastness of the highlands never seems to translate to a photograph, I’ll attempt to capture what I can. One of my friends suggested desolation often works well in black and white, so perhaps I’ll try that. I remember the first trip I took into the Scottish Highlands, it was 16 years ago, in June, and the empty mountains, devoid of forests, were striking. Since I’m off to the highlands beginning tomorrow I’ll be off the grid without an internet connection. Will be back on Tuesday with a lot of photographs!
